PhD Student of Doctoral School with lecture during na Conservation Social Science Conference 2026

PhD Student, Yunia Sarah Ater (Supervisor Prof. Maciej Kowalewski, Assistant supervisor Dr Colette Szczepaniak; Institute of Sociology), gave presentation on the lived experiences of menstruation while negotiating participation and engagement in marine spaces.

This lecture was presented during the 2nd Conservation Social Science Conference on 21st and 22nd October 2026. The event was organized by The Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) and Social Science Working Group (SSWG).

Using autoethnography, our PhD Student discussed how menstruation and access to menstrual products and sanitation facilities could influence women’s decisions to engage in activities in and around the ocean.

The guiding theme of the conference was Sustaining hope for Impact: Social Science for a Just and Resilient Future.

By providing a platform to share research and practice, the Conference highlighted the role of Social Science in policy and practice while providing actionable solutions for integrating Social Science to support sustainable and just outcomes for people and nature.

The Social Science Working Group (SSWG) of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) is a global professional community interested in the social dimensions of biodiversity conservation.

Since its inception 20 years ago, the SSWG has grown rapidly and has been successful in defining the conservation social science field, establishing an interdisciplinary and global epistemic conservation social science field community, legitimizing and mainstreaming the social sciences within SCB, elevating standards for conservation social science field research and practice, and applying conservation social science field insights to conservation practice and policy.

They have grown their membership, with members from close to 60 countries, offering a home to a diverse array of conservation scientists and practitioners.

Congratulations of being in such a noble company!
